Windows 10 free upgrade period ends July 29th

Microsoft released Windows 10 almost a year ago. During the months following to the release date, the company has offered the upgrade at no cost for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users .

However, Windows 10 upgrade will not be free forever. Microsoft has stated many times that Windows will only be free to update during the first year after its release, meaning that those users who want to update their previous versions to Windows 10 after July 29th, will have to pay for it. The company announced that the price for upgrading to Windows 10 Home after that date, will be $119.

Those users who upgraded an OEM device from Windows 7 or 8.1 to Windows 10, will be able to reinstall Windows 10 on that same device for lifetime. However, they won’t be able to move that Windows 10 upgrade to any other device by using the previous version license after July 29th. In that case, the user will have to purchase a new Windows 10 license to install it on a new hardware.

The latest version of Windows is already installed in more than 300 million computers worldwide, by the end of May. Still, Microsoft is doing efforts to increase the adoption of this version, the first to be upgradeable for free in the story of Windows. Microsoft has been pushing Windows 10 upgrade to users, by displaying “Recommended Update” pop-up notifications, or automatically scheduling upgrades for some users.
